Stylish Weddings For Less
Lots of couples are on a tight wedding planning budget these days. The good news is that small budget does not have to mean tacky or cheap looking. Find out the dos and don'ts of planning an elegant budget wedding.
Do: Make Your Own Invitations. Wedding invitations do not need to be engraved on heavy cotton paper to be attractive. It is a piece of cake to create your own invites using any standard computer and printer. Keep in mind that some of the most meaningful invitations are the ones which are handmade. They will be both beautiful and totally original at the same time.
Don't: Invite Guests Online. You certainly wouldn't want people to confuse your wedding with a kid's party! The quick e-vite that might be okay for Susie's fifth birthday is not elegant enough for your wedding. Faxes, emails, and texts are also inappropriate substitutes for a real invitation sent through the mail. Besides, you run the risk of your invitations getting lost in someone's spam box.
Do: Cut Your Flower Bill Creatively. There are plenty of ways to spend less on centerpieces while still making your reception look beautiful. You can use potted flowers instead of fresh cut blossoms. Or create gorgeous handmade paper flowers and display them in Mason jars for a casual country look. Create a woodsy and stylish centerpiece using nature inspired elements like moss, wooden slabs, and a few pillar candles. If you prefer classic floral centerpieces, you can always order pretty roses in bulk online for a great price.
Don't: Omit the Table Decor. Bare tables at the reception will just look sad. It is also important that the centerpieces are in proportion to the size of the tables. A bud vase in the middle of a round table for ten will not have enough impact. Use inexpensive things like candles, found objects, fresh produce, and seasonal ornaments to fill out your table decorations without spending a lot of money.
Do: Hunt Down the Best Deals. Smart shoppers can save quite a bit on bridal gowns and wedding accessories. If you time your gown shopping appointments around blow out sales and other special events, you can score a stunning wedding gown for a song. Shop for bridesmaid jewelry and bridal jewelry online to get the best prices. Shop for your wedding footwear anywhere but a bridal salon. See if someone will lend you a veil or a pashmina for the day. Many brides are able to coordinate a stunning outfit on a budget.
Don't: Be Cheap. It is great to be a savvy shopper, but tacky to be a cheapskate. If you choose low quality materials, it will show. Nobody is going to confuse a $99 gown for a nice quality bridal gown. Nor should you consider skipping on bridesmaid jewelry gifts or your bridal jewelry just to save a few bucks. Everyone needs the perfect jewelry to complete their wedding attire; besides it is just rude not to thank your bridesmaids properly. It is possible to save money on your wedding but not look like you cut corners.
Ishac Bertran Presents a Different Kind of Little Printer (Core77)
Ishac Bertran is a designer, currently based in Copenhagen (via Barcelona),
who has a "soft spot for typography." When his friend brought him a set of
vintage letterpress slugs as a souvenir from Italy, Bertran set out to build a
tiny letterpress printer using only leftover material from his previous
projects.
Three blocks of wood--presumably mahogany--a couple brass rods and a few
scraps of copper ultimately determined the shape of the device.
The tiny ink brayer, made with "some parts of an old radio cassette player
[he] found in the studio," is a nice touch.
