The chain itself, made up of bushings, rollers/spindles, and interconnecting links is made up of single or multiple rows of teeth arranged on the sprocket. Besides being properly installed, chain drives must be maintained and lubricated regularly to operate correctly. Rusting and sprocket wear are minimized by injecting an oil film on the outside surface of the chain and also between the rollers and corresponding bushings, the critical area of internal wear on a chain.

Dusty environments as found in mills can cause even soft dust to create a paste on a chain with a wet lubricant, reducing speed and increasing power requirements. Excessive wear is the result, plus shortened bushing, link and sprocket life, lost production, and increased downtime.
To avoid the formation of abrasive compounds which shorten the chain life and increase wear, a semi-dry cable oil should be used where dust is a problem. Dust, sand and other trash are ensured to be minimally picked-up. A semi-dry chain lubricant can extend the life of the chain by penetrating the working parts of the chain better than a wet lubricant. In corrosive and wet environments, synthetic ester lubricants have proven very successful. Reduced speed and greater power requirements result from paste on wet-lubricated chains created by soft dust from the dusty environment in cement, paper, and flour mills. Abrasive compounds that shorten chain life and increase wear in dusty environments are eliminated by a semi-dry chain lube.
