WHEN IS A POLO SHIRT NOT A POLO SHIRT?
When it comes to snappy dressing, we can all picture the outfit if we’re told that someone’s wearing their Levis, Nikes, polo shirt and Raybans. Many brand names have become synonymous with certain items of clothing – with the exception of polo shirts.
Most people would say the shirt is the brainchild of famous brand name, Ralph Lauren, but actually has its origins in the sport of polo itself centuries ago. Back in the 1800s, it is believed that polo players started wearing a special shirt with a button down collar which prevented the collar from flapping up in the wind. These were made from a thick knitted cotton and had long sleeves.
In the early 1920s, an Argentinian haberdasher who was also a polo player, produced an embroidered polo shirt that had the logo of a polo player on a pony embroidered on it which was first worn by members of the Hurlingham Polo Club near Buenos Aires. It was around the same time that the polo players got wind of a new shirt invented by Rene Lacoste, a famous tennis player, which was made from unstarched white cotton, and which had a thick, flat collar that could stand up against sunburn. The new design debuted at the 1926 US Open Final where Lacoste wore it first, and its popularity grew from there.
So although a polo shirt has become universally associated with golf and tennis, it began on the turf of a polo field. The embroidered polo shirt became even bigger news when Ralph Lauren brought out a line of classics in 24 colours.
While the Ralph Lauren brand can’t claim fame for inventing the polo shirt, it has become a universally accepted template for brands to display their own logos and identity. An embroidered polo shirts is one of the world’s most popular and enduring promotional products because it is wearable, practical, desirable as well as being a fashion classic. For best results, it’s advisable to use professionals to do the embroidery or screen printing so that a quality end-result is achieved. The better the quality – the more effective the brand awareness..
There are many ways of applying logos to items namely digitising and embroidery, screen printing and transfer technology. A professional promotional products company will be able to make practical recommendations that suit your needs and budget. For example, depending on the type of promotional product involved (eg T-shirt, mug, luggage etc ), the process could involve screen printing, embroidery or transfer technology and there are pros and cons to each process.
Not everyone will get to play polo, and not everyone will get to have a branded Ralph Lauren polo shirt. However, as polo shirts become the promotional products Perth of choice for more and more companies, more and more people will be lucky enough to have a polo of their own!
Dress a room in preppy attitude (Kansas City Star)
I'm a product of the '80s and can fondly remember my first tastes of preppy,
from walking the halls of my high school in the iconic Polo shirt to the days
of college where no gentleman was without his navy blazer, khaki pants and
striped tie. While the look has evolved, it's still a classic and extends well
beyond the wardrobe and right into our homes.
