Six Good Tips For Organic Tomato Gardening
Organic tomato gardening is a popular backyard hobby for many home gardeners. Since this crop is cultivated naturally and without using chemical-based fertilizers and pesticides, it costs higher than regular tomatoes. For people who want to know something about the bagging sand, compost or garden supplies, you can check online.
Below are 6 of the best tips to help you out:
Location - Organic tomato gardening requires a lot of sun - around 8 to 12 hours per day to enhance plant growth, and to keep the soil and the roots warm. If you have indoor organic tomato plants, you need to take them out during the day so they can absorb sunlight and heat from the sun.
Temperature - Soil temperature should be at least 55 degrees Fahrenheit during day time is favorable for organic tomato plants. When nights get cooler than usual, it's best that you cover your tomato plants with buckets or sheets overnight. During very hot summers, with temperatures of over 90 degrees, are quite difficult for tomato plants. Provide shade to your tomato plants to block the sun's scorching rays during daytime.
Watering - Regular watering is important for organic tomato gardening; or else rot diseases and sporadic growth of the fruit might occur. Watering the tomato plants should be done twice a week and the soil should be soaked within 6 to 8 inches. If the temperature is extremely hot, you need to water the plants more.
Fertilizer-Natural organic fertilizers are the best for organic tomato gardening because they don't contain chemical-based products. You should provide your tomato plants fertilizers that are high in nitrogen such as seaweed, composted grass/weed clippings, manure and fish emulsion.
Pest control-Natural pest control is the best for your tomato plants and they are in the form of natural enemies. Natural enemies of caterpillars and aphids that destroy tomato plants are lizards, birds, ladybugs and frogs. Staking your plants to keep them off the ground can protect them against insects and worms that live in there.
Mulching-You can use black plastic around the tomato plants to prevent weed growth and to keep the soil warm. This also helps direct the water to the roots.
You can earn a decent amount of income from an enjoyable hobby out of organic tomato gardening. You don't have to pay the high price for this coveted fruit once you have a full, thriving backyard.
