Seized Car Auctions Are Loaded With Low Priced Vehicles
With the problems in the economy lately, it seems that there have been more incidences of automobiles being seized by government agencies and by lending institutions, as well as more advertisements that promote seized car auctions. This means that there are also more people than ever who are considering taking advantage of one of these used car auctions to try to get a good deal on their next vehicle.
When people get behind on their car payments, it is common for the lending institution to take back the vehicle, especially if there is no way for the person to get caught up on missed loan payments. The result is that the larger banks, credit unions and finance companies are often overflowing with repossessed cars and seized cars that they need to sell through a seized car auction.
There are also times when a government agency has the power to seize cars and put them into seized car auctions. This might happen because a person owes an excessive amount of money in taxes, or because a vehicle was used in the commission of a crime or was purchased with illegal gains, such as with drug money.
When lending institutions, banks, police departments, and various federal agencies end up with a growing number of cars that have been seized or repossessed, they ultimately spend a lot of money to store these vehicles. In most cases, the people from whom the cars were seized have either no recourse at all for getting the vehicle back or a short window of opportunity to get the vehicle back before the agency has the right to sell it off. If there is no longer any chance of the person being able to reclaim the vehicle, then it can be sold through a seized car auction, which the agencies prefer to do as soon as possible to minimize their storage expenses.
In many cases, a seized car auction can be a bargain hunters dream, enabling them to save hundreds, or even thousands of dollars, on a wide variety of cars, truck, vans, recreational vehicles, and even boats and other recreational sports vehicles. These seized, motor car auctions provide people with terrific opportunities to get a better quality vehicle than they might otherwise have been able to afford. For those who are really lucky, they could be driving away with their dream car after only paying one quarter to one half of the amount that they might have paid, had they gone to a regular dealership.
It is helpful if you take some time to do some preparation before going to seized car auctions. The first thing you should do is have in mind a few types of vehicles you are most interested in and research the fair market value of the different models beforehand. It is also a good idea to attend at least one used car auction before you plan to get involved in the bidding. This will help you to get a feel for the proceedings and the entire process of a car auto auction, as well as giving you more confidence when you are ready to start bidding.

What are auto auctions?
Auto auctions are places where cars are sold. It could be from a public auction that has several vehicles to sell or it could be from an online auction at such places as EBay. There are also government seized auctions that occur regularly. The best place to look for these auctions is in your local newspaper. Many companies regularly have auctions at a set place and can offer up more choices in cars, trucks, vans and sport-utility vehicles.
What is a salvaged title?
A salvaged title is a title that is given to a car after it has been wrecked. This is does not mean that the car has had a little fender bender. It means when there has been significant damage to the point where the insurance company has decided it is irreparable. Many mechanics will apply for a salvaged title after they have restored the car to its running condition. It will have a new Vehicle Identification Number posted on the car as not to confuse it with its previous title. Most salvaged cars when restored are quite good vehicles. But there are some that are not. You are taking a huge chance when you buy a vehicle that has a salvaged title.
Where do auto auctions get their cars??
Auto auctions obtain their automobiles from various different sources. The cars may be from repossessions foreclosed by the lender or the bank. Some cars come from private owners who want to sell their car in an auction environment rather than through the newspaper. EBay has turned into a popular auto auction site with many dealerships selling their inventory through the website.
Am I allowed to test drive the cars at auto auctions?
That depends on the particular auto auction and who you are dealing with. Of course if you are buying your car online from an auto auctions site you will be unable to test drive the car unless you are local to the seller. Many auto auctions do not give the opportunity for buyers to test drive the vehicles because of the sheer number of buyers that would want to do so. You have to take this into account when you are dealing with auto auctions. Many times you have to rely on what the auctioneer lists as defects and take him or her at their word.

Tax return and sales tax deduction?
I'm trying to do some taxes. Thanks to YA answers I got it clear I can't get the new car tax deduction since mine is used. But the in the H&R block tax home edition it also has a section for sales tax paid on big ticket items like cars, truck, boats, materials purchased for home additions. If I bought a new used car and materials for a home addition, can I put it? What about federal taxes paid the prior year? It has lines for 2007 and 2008. I just don't want to get an audit. Please help again. Thank you very much
I'm kinda new at this.
Thanks. That's what I thought.
If you itemize your deduction on Schedule A, you may claim either state and local income taxes or sales taxes as an itemized deduction. If you choose to claim sales taxes paid, you may use the IRS's guidelines for estimated sales tax paid and add actual sales tax paid for big ticket items such as a used car.
If you take the standard deduction you cannot claim the sales tax paid.
