‘Are All Tahitian Pearls Black?’ And Other Pearl FAQ
With all the different pearl colours and types out there, it can be difficult to know just what you’re looking at when you want to buy pearl earrings. For those interested in buying pearls, or for gem enthusiasts who wish to learn more, here are answers to some of the most commonly asked questions about pearls.
Tell Me About Tahitian Pearls – Are They All Black?
Not only are Tahitian cultured pearls not exclusively black, they’re also not grown in Tahiti. Tahitian pearls are also bought in colours other than black, such as blue, green and grey. And they’re grown in the lagoons of small islands that are part of a group known as French Polynesia.
What’s The Difference Between Cultured Pearl Earrings And Natural Pearl Earrings?
If there is an oyster or mollusc on the seabed and something makes its way inside, like a parasite, then this is how natural pearls are formed. In order to shield itself, the oyster will over the parasite in an organic substance called nacre, which then creates the mother of pearl we know today. It takes time for the nacre layers to build up, but when the newly-formed pearl is retrieved, it proves that it is worth the wait.
When it comes to cultured pearls, they are formed in the same way, but with man’s input rather than nature’s. Man’s input is such that he will place something inside the oyster which speeds up the pearl-making process. At the end of it all, you have some beautiful cultured pearls that end up in the shops for you to buy pearl earrings or pearl necklaces etc.
Saltwater Pearls Vs Freshwater Pearls
It depends on who you ask, but many pearl experts today agree that freshwater cultured pearls can rival the beauty of their saltwater cousins. Not so long ago, cultured pearls didn’t have the same quality and lustre that they have today, but thanks to improved culturing techniques, these pearls are now stunning items to buy and treasure.
If you’re a pearl fan, you can buy freshwater coloured pearls in many different variations and these can vary from cream to pink. One of the most popular pearl options at the moment is lavender. White pearls are bleached to enhance their natural shine. Black freshwater cultured pearls are treated with dye or heat to produce their inky colour.
You definitely get more value for money with freshwater pearls. You can buy pearl earrings in any colour you like, as long as you have the cash to splash.
Where can I find cheap, black, round drawer knobs?
I'm looking for ones similar to these, but not as pricey:

At my local hardware store, they're 1.50 each. I'm looking to spend less than half that. I'd be really appreciative if someone pointed me in a direction to find ones like these.
Thanks!
Do they have to be metal?
Lee Valley Tools has some plastic ones for cheaper: http://www.leevalley.com/hardware/page.aspx?c=1&p=41923&cat=3,46742,44009&ap=1

so Fantagraphics is offering a bunch of special mini-comics for people that
make qualifying orders. I don't really have much more to say about that,
except I want as many as I can get my hands on. The lack of a collector's
market for alternative books except in some rare circumstances is beginning to
freak me out a bit. Who wouldn't want to have that Matt Groening Xeroxed comic
book that only had 20 copies that they show in that new Lynda Barry book over
just about anything more traditionally bagged and boarded? I have a hunch that
there may be more Golden Age comic books in existence than early alternatives,
especially when you go deep in both categories. * Dave Richards talks to
